Obama’s Stimulus Plan
So, I think Obama’s stimulus plan and the reaction it’s received so far says a lot about what we can expect out of the next four (or at least two, until the midterm elections) years. Some of it is promising, some of it not so much.
First, the promising part. Obama really is trying to be bipartisan, and change the partisan mentality of politics. That and it’s probably going to work.
The not so promising part. Obama has already discovered that with this goal, it’s not just the Republicans that are the oposition, but both parties, and especially his own.
I always foresaw problems with having the President and Congressional majorities from the same party, but not this kind of problem. The problem now is that we have a President who was elected on, and generally seems to believe in, the idea of breaking the mold. On the other hand, we have a Congress full of typical politicians. They are power hungry, they are bitter, and they want to prove a point. They are unhappy with their new President because he is trying to work with the other side. After eight years, they thought they could get their way, but their President is not going to be a Democratic lap dog. Good for him, but good luck. As I’ve said all along, Obama may be a great President, but he will never live up to the expectations he set for himself.
